Our Vision

All Things New.

Our vision is our optimal desired state

God the Ultimate Artist is at work making all things new. We exist to join Him in creating a city where beauty emerges and everyone belongs. And through His gospel, our broken and fragmented humanity becomes a work of art.

The vision of Detroit Church can be described by one word, Jesus! Jesus is the embodiment of the phrase all things new. And we long to be like Jesus and do what he did. We acknowledge that this is not our permanent home. We serve a sending God, who has sent us into the world to be at work with him making all things new.

Revelation 21:5a

5 And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”

Jeremiah 29:4-7

4 "Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. 6 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. 7 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

Our Mission

To Awaken Detroit to the Greatest Adventure of All Time

Our missional mandate

The greatest adventure of all time begins with two words; Follow Me! We are about disciples making disciples. Our journey of faith does not begin with us seeking God, but rather him seeking after us. And as we respond to his pursuit, our hearts are renewed and revived through the finished work of the Son of God. Jesus never intended for his disciples to follow him alone, but charged them to go and engage cultures and people groups for the sake of the gospel. This is a great reminder that the church exists for outsiders, and for us.

Matthew 28:18-20

18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Our Core Values

BELONG Before You Believe

Each of us is made in the image of God, and as such, we all possess an intrinsic value given by God even before belief. We love to create spaces for those from different backgrounds, classes, and walks of life can freely come to the table set by a loving and holy God. Remember, God does not need us to believe in him, in order for him to believe in us. He doesn’t share the gloriously redeeming life of his only son with us as a result of our decision to believe. It’s the opposite, we believe because Christ died for us while we were sinners.

Romans 5:6-11

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person--though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die-- 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

SEE the Unseen

We cannot ignore the state of the world around us, and we don’t want to. Our faith does not require us to not see our city, the people and the systems that have been in place for years. But it empowers us to see our city the way God sees our city, because we’re more focused on HIM than anything else. As we see him, we see each other though his eyes. Our faith is the evidence that allows us to see the unseen.

2 Corinthians 4:17-18

17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Hebrews 11:1-3

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the people of old received their commendation. 3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

Look UP

This is a time of trends and virility. Each day we’re inundated with images, ideals, and even personalities that our highly esteemed in today’s culture. As the church, we have to have on central focus. And it cannot the temporal nature of popular and/or christian culture. It can only be Jesus. Jesus is our focus, inspiration and example, and he will never fail us.

Hebrews 12:1-2

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Philippians 1:6

6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

JUSTICE is an Active,
Relentless Pursuit

Justice is not an idea that we created. As a matter of fact, without a greater sense of right and wrong, we might even be aware of justice or injustice. This is because justice flows from the heart of God. And as much as he loves justice, he hates injustice. As he calls on the Church to execute the plan of salvation, He also calls on the Church to address injustice in our world.

Micah 6:8

8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Psalms 10:18

18 to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.

EMBRACE the Ultimate
Artist Within

So many people have believed the lie that they are not creative. That a creative existence is only reserved for the few elite among us. But we believe that every human being is created by God. And that God created us all with the distinct capacity to continue to create. The expressions and degrees of our creative genius may vary but not one of us is meant to live a life void of creating good works. We have a God given license to create. His spirit lives in us, therefore we can cultivate beauty and art.

Ephesians 2:8-10

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Exodus 35:30-33

30 Then Moses said to the people of Israel, "See, the LORD has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 31 and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, 32 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, 33 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft.
