Today, June 19th—Juneteeth, also known as Jubilee Day, Freedom and Emancipation Day, celebrates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved black people were told they were free from the American Chattel System that began in the United States in 1619. While we understand that our ultimate freedom is found in Christ alone, we acknowledge the significance of this day, honoring the progress that has been made, and the remaining work to be done in our collective, relentless pursuit of justice. Here are a few opportunities around the city to celebrate as we remember that our presence as Christ followers can be a testament to the love, unity, and hope that we find in Jesus.
