Raising $200K in pre-development funds to acquire land and rehab a 29,000 sq. ft. property located at 8300 Woodward in the North End community of Detroit.
To provide a physical space that Detroit Church and our neighbors can both call home. A space that is safe for children and allows us to better serve our community as a mission-driven ministry. A space that combats extractive development in an already highly gentrified area through community engagement and just development practices.
We are asking each family that can to give $1,000 in hopes to raise at least $5OK, and potentially more. This amount will be paired with $5OK from Detroit Church reserves. The remaining balance will be raised through requests to mission aligned partners.
Our goal is to complete this first phase of fund raising by the end of November. At that time, we will submit an LOI (letter of intent) along with a deposit towards the purchase of the property.
Once the pre-development funds have been secured, we will enter into the 2nd phase of planning and fund raising for the purchase and rehab of this property. This phase will consist of conducting community engagement activities, procuring financial commitments from our network churches, support from government and philanthropic agencies, and construction financing.
The Story behind it all
Since the inception of Detroit Church, the vision has been clear: "God, the ultimate artist, is at work making all things new. We exist to join Him in creating a city where beauty emerges, and everyone belongs. Through His gospel, our fragmented humanity becomes a work of art." According to His faithfulness and our obedience, we've seen God do the impossible time and time again.
God's mission is so much bigger than a physical building. Over the last seven and a half years, we've witnessed this firsthand as a portable church. God has been making us into a spiritual house where people of various styles, eras, and cultural identities can come and gather around the essentials of the faith and be changed by the unfathomable love of Jesus. Now, we believe He's leading us to discover what it means to be planted within the North End community of Detroit, in a physical facility that both we and our neighbors can call home.
It's crucial that we have a building that is home to more than just Detroit Church. We don't just want to build another physical structure for the church. We believe God is up to something special, something that looks similar to what Jesus did when "the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:14). We want to create a physical space for the gospel to be incarnated or embedded into this neighborhood, a place many can call home. Home is where we belong apart from performance. Home is where we can be free to be. It's where we're challenged and invited to grow. It's where family lives!
Just like God has done so many times before, He often blesses, empowers, and enables His people through others. We want to invite you into this momentous opportunity.
Over the next four weeks, we aim to raise over $50,000 as we begin the process of procuring pre-development funds to purchase a building in the North End. So we are asking each family to consider giving $1,000 (over and above what they generally give week to week) to help us meet this goal.
